Synopsis
Travelers
to Italy view Milano as the least interesting or romantic of the five
major centers of Renaissance art and architecture--Rome, Naples, Venice,
Florence and Milan. Beyond The Last Supper, the Duomo and
the Sforza Castle, what is there for the visitor to enjoy? The answers
lie in the multitude of beautiful 15th century castles and villas
that ring Milan, once the property of the Sforza dukes and their friends
and enemies. Mr. Selling brings this fascinating period to life through
a series of some 300 of his own color and black and white photographs
taken over four decades, intermingled recreations of Leonardo da Vinci
with sketches and paintings. All are set in a highly creative and
evocative design. Studying the ceiling of the Sala del Asse, The
Last Supper and The Great Horse of Francesco Sforza,
as well as designs for canals and military structures, the author
casts new light on the ways in which Leonardo's work unscored the
ambitions of the Sforza dukes...even as he warned Ludovico IL Moro
of the perils that lay ahead.
